The full name laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is an artificial airway placed in the throat cavity and ventilated through the throat cavity by sealing the esophagus and throat cavity with a balloon. It avoids endotracheal intubation, but is more effective than the use of a mask.

Disadvantages of laryngeal mask

1. The sealing effect is not good, and flatulence (especially IPPV) may occur. It is not appropriate to ventilate with too high positive pressure.

2. Laryngeal mask is more prone to esophageal reflux than mask, and should not be used in patients with full stomach.

3. Increased oral secretions.

4. For some types of laryngeal mask, ordinary suction tube cannot be used to attract tracheal secretions through laryngeal mask.
