Virus preservation fluid is a protective liquid added in the virus sampling tube to protect the nasopharyngeal swab samples. It is commonly referred to domestically as virus preservation fluid, commonly referred to as VTM fluid or UTM fluid.Usually, during nucleic acid testing, nucleic acid PCR cannot be conducted directly at the sample collection place, and the swab samples need to be transported for testing, and VTM needs to be added.
Virus detection is different from conventional biochemical detection. The virus itself is a simple microorganism that must live in living cells. After sampling, the virus leaves the host cell, and its protein shell and nucleic acid will degrade quickly in the sampling tube. Therefore, during nucleic acid test, it is impossible to determine whether the initial sample contains virus, which is likely to cause false negative.
After adding virus preservation solution to the sample tube, the above problems can be solved:

The virus preservation solution is non-inactivated and inactivated
1. Virus preservation solution inactivated type. This mixed solution medium contains highly effective virus lysis solution, which can inactivate the virus quickly after sampling, effectively prevent the risk of secondary infection, and release viral nucleic acid for easy detection.
2. The VTM solution contains Rnase inhibitor, which can prevent the nuclease in the cytoplasm from degrading the viral nucleic acid after the cells are broken and degraded in the sample. The larger degree of degradation can protect the stability of viral nucleic acid and greatly improve the efficiency of nucleic acid extraction.
3. VTM products can be stored at room temperature for 12 months without sampling, and samples can be stored at room temperature for one week after sampling, with good sealing, convenient storage and transportation, and saving transportation cost.
Different from the above inactivated types, the non-inactivated virus preservation solution does not contain lysis buffer, but a variety of solution components conducive to the culture of virus host cells, such as Hanks solution base, gentamicin, fungal antibiotics,BSA (V), cryoprotectant, biological buffer and amino acids, etc. This VTM can guarantee the integrity of the virus and help to increase the survival time and infection stability of the virus. Therefore, the protection of virus detection and the preservation temperature of samples after sampling are required to be higher.Non-inactivated virus storage solution can be used for the collection and transportation of many specimens, including many kinds of viruses and mycoplasma, ureaplasma, chlamydia, etc.
Whether inactivated or non-inactivated virus storage solution, its basic function is to protect the integrity of the virus or virus nucleic acid, to ensure the accuracy of viral nucleic acid detection, both VTM has advantages.
